ABSTRACT
The article presents development stages of fields of economic studies in Poland between 1924, i.e. the moment of acquisition of academic rights, including the right to confer a doctoral degree, by the first higher economic education establishment - the Warsaw School of Economics, and the present day. Over those years, the fields of studies in economics had been subject to major changes on several occasions. This was largely due to economic and systemic reasons, but apart from that could also be attributed to the progress of science and to differing views on the education profile of economists, ranging from a narrow-profile specialisation (e.g. 34 fields in 1954) to a broad profile pattern (e.g. six fields in 1996) The article also gives an account of discussions still going on in higher economic education circles over the number of fields of economic studies and criteria for their differentiation, as well as over the issue of the future two-level organisation of university studies in the context of the Bologna Declaration. Furthermore, it presents selected data illustrating rapid growth of higher economic education in Poland in the last dozen of years in terms of the number of establishments.
